2009 Updates
- The facility is taking shape
A 1,500 square foot room adjacent to the science building for exclusive use by Hooked on Science has been allocated. The space is being prepared for use during the 2009-2010 academic year.
- A strong team is engaged
In January we formally chartered the Hooked on Science Advisory Committee to administer the program. The board members, all from Concord and most with children in the public schools, are:
- Robert Bergman, BS, UCLA
- Frances S. Brown, MS, Northeastern; BS, MIT
- Dr. Geoffrey Trussell, PhD, William and Mary; AB, Bowdoin
- David Wu, MBA, Harvard; MS, BS, MIT
- John Boynton, CEF board representative and committee chair
- The program is emerging
For 2009-2010, Hooked on Science will expand its footprint with new seminars in biotechnology, organic chemistry, and field geography as well as a robotics club that will compete in a national robotics competition.
- We are in a strong financial position
As of June 2009 we had raised almost $200,000, about 60% from specific HoS donations and the remainder from the general CEF grant budget. The committee will be refining the budget to match the curriculum roadmap and implementation schedule. Our original estimate of $400,000 may have been high, but for now our fundraising efforts continue to target that number until the a long term budget and business model has been approved.
Our next fundraising event will take place this fall in the Hooked on Science Room – stay tuned.
