Wisnia Kapp Reading Training

This grant will provide training opportunities to early elementary (K-2) and special education teachers and tutors. The training will provide a strong, structured phonological approach to language decoding, which represents a solid foundation skill for the development of fluency and proficiency in reading.


Best Practices: Writing

This grant is a follow-up to the successful Project READ Best Practices: Reading grant supported by the Concord Education Fund for the 2000 – 2001 school year. The grant will provide training to teachers (grades 1-5) in Written Expression, which is another element of the project READ program that focuses on writing skills. The training will present a structured foundation for writing instruction that is found to be compatible with several alternative writing methodologies.


Professional Development Collaboration Model

Most elementary school teachers will note their most precious resource is time. Time to plan, to differentiate programs for individual needs, to share ideas and strategies with colleagues, and to evaluate instructional approaches. This grant will allow for time outside of the school day for teachers to collaborate around their best practices.


Audiobook Initiative

This grant will fund the creation of a collection of approximately 75 unabridged audio-chapterbooks as well as two-dozen cassette recorders for students in grades 3-5. The grant is designed to enhance the excitement of literature, provide support for transitioning to independent reading, and to help instill a love of books and reading in children.

This grant will fund the creation of mini-libraries in the second-grade classrooms at the Willard School. These libraries will include an assortment of books, varying in genre and text levels, designed to support the acquisition of decoding, comprehension, and fluency skills in emerging and early readers.


Expanding Our Understanding of Contemporary World History through Children’s Literature

This follow-up to a 1998 grant will use children’s literature to examine the many varied perspectives that comprise the “making of history”. Using a collection of books selected by the project leader, students will evaluate considerations of human and civil rights, social justice and activism, and the need to better understand government choices.

Weather Station

Grant Amount $9,830.00
Project Leader Jeffrey Yuhas, Earth Science and Physics Teacher

This grant will provide funding for the purchase and installation of an Air Watch Weather system, including computer, software, and Lightware Projection system. Ninth grade Earth Science students will use the technology for meteorological studies; physics and chemistry students can use station data to examine heat and moisture variables; and math classes can use data for various area plotting exercises. In addition, the project leader anticipates forming a meteorology club to explore further potential of the system.


Optics Lab Module

This grant will provide funding for the implementation of a nine-station optics lab for use by 11th and 12th grade physics students. The availability of lab materials will allow for the instruction in a range of optical experiments that could not otherwise be evaluated within the physics program.


Connecting School, Community, and Workplace

This follow-up grant will provide continued funds for the creation of a sustainable internship program for Concord-Carlisle High School students with strong connections to CCHS curriculum. The grant will support the expansion of academic, community, and workplace connections by a team of community and business leaders, allowing for the design of a comprehensive internship model and a multi-year operational plan.


WIQH Radio Initiative

Grant Amount $7,200

The newly reopened WIQH radio station has been an enormous success at CCHS, with more than 120 students actively involved. Many have become certified radio broadcasters. This follow-up grant will provide equipment which allows for station improvements and which can expand hours of operation for the station, thereby allowing for greater student participation in the activity.

Summer Enrichment

This follow-up grant will provide continued funds for course development in support of a comprehensive summer program. Courses for K-12 students include academic enrichment as well as extra support services in a broad range of subject areas.


Developing Responsible Behavior in Schools

This grant will provide funds for a one day professional development workshop available to all K – 12 teachers during the summer of 2001. A nationally known and locally popular facilitator will focus on concrete ways that teachers, administrators, and students can create an atmosphere of respect, civility, and self-discipline in schools.


Webmaster - Curriculum and Instruction

The system’s Strategic Planning Process has highlighted the need for clear, cogent, and easily accessible communication between school and community. This grant will fund a stipend to hire a qualified consultant for the purpose of designing a district website. The consultant will identify information sought by likely website users; design a plan and corresponding web architecture; and provide recommendations to the system on implementation and maintenance of a website.
