Full Steam Ahead
Full STEAM Ahead supports a more interdisciplinary, project-based approach to teaching science by integrating technology, engineering, math, and media arts.
In the summer of 2013 CEF funded a new Professional Learning Community (PLC) consisting of K-5 teachers who are now ready to develop some ‘hot’ units in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (a.k.a. STEAM).
Established to expose students to STEM topics in elementary school and inspire an interest that can be progressively cultivated by the time they get to take advantage of the CEF-funded high school offerings, the PLC spent the summer of 2013 getting all steamed up. Educated and trained by experts at RISD, MIT and the Science Discovery Museum on how best to integrate STEAM disciplines, these teachers are able to create new curricula that focus on design and problem solving using real-world applications.
