Knowledge of Bird Songs
Auditory training in bird song engages middle school students in the synergies between science and music.
A CEF-funded bird expert trained middle school students and CMS staff members to recognize local birds and their bird songs. With a long and distinguished history of composers being inspired by bird songs, children in general music learned to consider how composers have been impacted by the sounds of their environment – from the bird songs of Vivaldi’s “Spring” or Strauss’s “Tale of the Vienna Woods” to the train journey that inspired Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue.”
